Free and confidential legal advice service

The YLC is a free and confidential legal advice and referral service for young people aged between 12 - 25. We operate a drop-in centre in Civic which is open each weekday afternoon between 1-5pm. The YLC also provides assistance over the phone and by e-mail.

The YLC provides one-off advice and assistance in a wide range of areas, including:

  • car accidents

  • consumer issues

  • debt

  • residential tenancy

  • criminal matters

  • traffic offences

  • employment and apprenticeships

  • discrimination, and

  • protection orders

If we are unable to assist, we can refer you to other services, including other legal services and youth organisations. For more information about common referral points go to links.

Community legal education

The YLC also undertakes community legal education. Our outreach program runs on a regular basis at ACT high schools, colleges and youth organisations. As part of this program, the YLC gives free interactive presentations on a range of legal topics, including:

  • drug and alcohol

  • police powers and security guards

  • employment and apprenticeships

  • internet and mobile phone use including cyberbullying

YLC work in community legal education aims to promote young people's knowledge of their legal rights and responsibilities and raises awareness of the services the YLC offers. Click here for more information.
